Laura Gravander, Youth Services Librarian

I joined the staff of Whitefish Bay Public Library as a Youth Services Librarian in 2018. I have been a professional librarian serving children and teens since 2011, working for five years in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the Milwaukee area since 2016. I mostly read children’s and Young Adult fiction, and especially love graphic novels. In my spare time, I enjoy yoga and walking outside, camping and travelling, and watching Netflix with my boyfriend and my cat.

Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson

This girl power-themed graphic novel tells the story of Astrid, a twelve-year-old who has always done everything with her best friend Nicole. When Astrid discovers roller derby, she assumes Nicole will be by her side—until Nicole signs up for dance camp with a new friend instead of roller derby camp with Astrid. Roller derby challenges Astrid to come out of her shell, make new and interesting friends, challenge the status quo, and learn who she can be when she decides to embrace her uniqueness.

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

This captivating Young Adult novel in verse explores the inner life of Xiomara Batista—the Poet X—a Latinx teen living in Harlem whose tough exterior hides her creativity and love of slam poetry. She lets her feelings out only into her leather-bound journal, where she writes beautiful verses that express her feelings about her controlling parents, her complicated relationship with her twin brother, and her growing feelings for Aman, a boy from school.
