Taylor Camara, Youth Services Reference Assistant

Hi! I'm Taylor, the Youth Services Reference Assistant here at WFBPL. As a Rhode Island transplant who recently moved here from Chicago, I am excited to get to know the community and Milwaukee itself! I am currently in the MLIS and Museum Studies program at UWM and started my library career here as a Circulation Assistant in August of 2020. In my spare time, you can usually find me coffee in hand at a library or museum. I am passionate about getting others excited about cultural spaces, community outreach, and diverse children’s literature! I’m so excited to be here and eager to learn from such a wonderful team at WFBPL.

Milo imagines the world by Matt de la Pena

Another gem collaboration from author Matt de la Peña and illustrator/author Christian Robinson (Last Stop on Market Street, Carmela Full of Wishes), Milo Imagines the World is a sweet tale of Milo’s travels on the subway through his imagination and artistry, proving you don’t really know anyone just by looking at them.

My Papi has a Motorcycle by Isabel Quintero

My Papi Has a Motorcycle is an important children’s book for all ages. While younger readers can appreciate Daisy and her idea of “home” while riding on the back of her father’s motorcycle, older readers are introduced to gentrification and its lasting impact on communities.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie

I read this in one of my favorite classes in college -- This classic, coming-of-age story has a little bit of everything. Between humor, awkward moments, and an inside look into social issues and concerns affecting Native American Reservations, Junior's story is heartbreaking, comedic, and powerful. A young adult novel I keep coming back to.

Something’s Wrong! By Jory John

What's not to love about author Jory John (The Good Egg, The Bad Seed, Cat Problems)? Hilarious, beloved, embarrassing moments captured by a bear, his underwear, and his friends in the woods. A fun-filled, laugh-out-loud read for all ages.

Sal and Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Alberto Hernandez

As one of the 2020 recipients of the Pura Belpré Award, Sal and Gabi Break the Universe is a contemporary high school tale filled with friends, bullies, empathy, and magic..? Yes! Interwoven with Cuban mythology, this science fiction novel is so much fun and will have you invested in Sal and Gabi. So excited to read the second book in this series presented by Rick Riordan.
